Next to nothing for color

The defendant in the Johnson case was arrested for selling stolen AT&T long distance numbers for $8.00 at Port Authority in NYC. He was charged with possession of stolen property. The problem with that charge was that the indictment didn't allege any tangible property that was stolen -- Johnson rightfully owned the slip of paper on which three numbers were written.

I may load and unload

While a telephone credit card number is a "thing of value," care must be taken to be sure that the number in question is indeed such a number. A court must be satisfied that the number possessed is not some innocuous number, innocently had by a defendant. Such a judgment can be made, of course, only in the context of attending circumstances. A programming language and a programming paradigm can shape how we engineer a world.

After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Someone asked why humanities research got left out, and we had to say that we couldn't find it to be directly relevant on our top 10 list of bulleted points. Ian made the point, and I agreed, that doing the research for this panel made us think differently about academic research. While I'm not going to say that what we've done personally has no value, it was a definite challenge to try and make it *directly relevant* in a BULLETED POINT for developers. And there are huge gaps in what we don't know. Where is the research about sports games, to take just one example?

H. Nothing in this Section shall prohibit, limit, or otherwise restrict the purchase, sale, exchange, or other transaction related to stocks, bonds, futures, options, commodities, or other similar instruments or transactions occurring on a stock or commodities exchange, brokerage house, or similar entity. [Garnet Psaltery: but I don't treat this world as a game] I submit for your comments the idea that the reason many developers have a hard time finding anything of value not only from researchers, but often from their own players, is that they are, in effect, seeing a different world, all the time.

...That “real-guy-in-a-play” thing is the essence of the online experience. Going online makes everybody a Hamlet: it's not that we suddenly see the virtual world as so real, it's that we suddenly see the real world as so virtual, and the distinction vanishes. Voilà: immersion. The best way to put the assertion (and this is all it is at this point; and again, please keep in mind that there are a number of familiar exceptions) is that the practice of game software development generates a way of seeing and defining problems (as essentially precise, logical, and algorithmic), and creating solutions (through linear, text-defined code) that makes other ways of accounting for what happens in VWs seem at worst nonsensical and at best irrelevant or quixotic. They looked friendly enough--at least, no one had fruit ready to throw at us.
